DIY Home Heating Tips

Moving to Pittsburgh in the early months of the year is courageous.  Temperatures in February are averaging in the low 20s, which means Pittsburgh residents are running their heaters frequently. There are few utilities that can dent your bank account like heating your apartment.

If you are looking for DIY home heating tips, your local Pittsburgh movers at All My Sons have some suggestions:

1. Blinds are great for regulating heat, and keeping cold out during nighttime. Keep your blinds open on sunny days, and closed on cloudy days and at night.

2. Talk to your landlord about installing storm windows – these can reduce heating costs by 15%.

3. Use caulk or weather stripping to make sure you don’t have any air leaks allowing a draft in.

4. Program your thermostat to a set amount at day and night. During the day, try 68 degrees. At night, or when no one is home, keep it down to 55. Lowering your heat can save heating costs by 5%.

5. Humid air makes you feel warmer. Place shallow pans of water near radiators close to warm air vents. This creates humidity in the air, which will warm your apartment up.

6. Put rugs down on the floor. They are inexpensive, and provide heat between your feet and the cold floors.

7. Make your bed for winter with extra pillows and blankets. Also, keep slippers near your bed so you can keep your feet warm as you move about the house.

DIY home heating tips will help you keep your home toasty while minimizing your heating bills.
